RUTGERS-NEWARK WOMEN'S SOCCER

Margeaux Hedley
NEWARK, NJ – William Paterson smothered the Rutgers-Newark attack in a 3-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference decision on Alumni Field on Senior Night.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Scarlet Raiders (4-14-1, NJAC 1-6-1) did not get off a shot against the Pioneers (8-7-2, NJAC 4-4-0) who secured an NJAC Championship Tournament berth with the victory.

Freshman goalkeeper Mercedes Lois made three of her six saves in the opening half as the Pioneers led just 1-0 at the break.  But William Paterson piled up a 19-0 edge in shots and dominated corner kicks, 9-2, to control the match.

Senior forward Erika Juricic came off the bench to have a hand in all three Pioneers goals.  She netted what proved to be the game winner with just 2:55 left in the opening period by lofting shot from near the left corner over Lois and into the right side of the net.

The Pioneers tallied two goals just 1:25 apart in the second half to break open the contest.  Juricic buried a crossing pass from the left side from senior forward Michelle Marabondo in the 62nd minute.  Senior midfielder Laela Brock one-timed a cross from Juricic who was deep on the right side to end the scoring at 62:49.

Junior goalkeeper Mary Jane Seiler got the win without facing a shot with freshman Cat Clint coming on to play the final nine minutes of the contest.

The loss knocked the Scarlet Raiders out of contention for the NJAC playoffs and dulled Senior Night for Margeaux Hedley who played in her final home match.  The four-year starter and team captain will cap her career when Rutgers-Newark visits Richard Stockton on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. NJAC match.
