Scarlet Raiders Fall To FDU-Florham, 3-1

MADISON, NJ – Rutgers-Newark gave up two first-half goals and fell to FDU-Florham, 3-1, in a non-conference match on Shields Field.

The Scarlet Raiders (1-11-1), who suffered their sixth straight loss, finished the match without starting freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Benoit who suffered an injury in the 30th minute.  Rookie Mercedes Lois, Rutgers-Newark's leading scorer from the midfield, made four saves against one goal allowed in the final 60 minutes.  Benoit had two saves while yielding two goals.

Freshman forward Cristina Estremera tallied the Raiders' goal just 1:07 into the second half to trim the Rutgers-Newark deficit to 2-1.  Estremera put four of her five shots on goal, but the Raiders were out-shot, 20-7, on the night.

Sophomores Sarah Cunha and Victoria Nunez took the other Raider shots.

Junior midfielder Jennifer DeGioia netted the Devils' first-half goals to provide the winning points while junior forward Michelle Hickey close out the scoring with a goal in the 63rd minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Anna Bandly notched three saves for FDU-Florham (3-9) which won for the second time in its last three matches.

Rutgers-Newark completes a run of three non-league games on Monday, visiting John Jay in Maspeth, NY, at 6 p.m.  The Raiders reenter New Jersey Athletic Conference play on October 10, hosting New Jersey City on Alumni Field at 7:30 p.m.
