Oswego State Edges Scarlet Raiders, 4-3

RUTGERS-NEWARK SOFTBALL

Nicole Odell
CLERMONT, FL – Pitchers Liane Drastal and Brianna Alicchio combined for a 4-hitter, but Rutgers-Newark came up a run short in a 4-3 loss to Oswego State at the NTC Spring Games.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

Drastal allowed just one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out one in four innings before Alicchio came in to limit the Lakers (3-4) to two runs on one hit and a walk to finish the game.  But an unearned run in the first inning proved to be the difference in the tight battle.

The Scarlet Raiders (2-3) climbed back from a 2-0 deficit to knot the score in the fifth.  Junior third baseman Monica Liotto doubled home freshman second baseman Kelsey Lucas, who had reached on a walk, before scoring on an infield grounder by sophomore designated player Gabby Spinella.

But junior leftfielder Nicole Ouellette ripped an RBI triple and scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to deep left field by freshman catcher Justine Abramowski in the top of the sixth.

The Raiders trimmed their deficit to one in the bottom of the sixth when junior leftfielder Nicole Odell doubled, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a 2-out single by sophomore pinch hitter Tiara Santi.

Laker junior pitcher Ashley Snyder scattered five hits while walking four and striking out six to pick up the complete-game win.

Rutgers-Newark plays Macalester College at 5 p.m. and Bethany College at 7 at the Legends Way Ballparks on Wednesday.
