Rowan Stalls Scarlet Raider Attack In NJAC Play

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark failed on the first set point of the match and Rowan capitalized on the opportunity in a 3-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference win in The Golden Dome.  Games scores were 26-24, 25-17, 25-22.

The Scarlet Raiders (6-7, NAJC 0-2) rallied from 21-15 deficit to take a 24-23 lead in game one, but an attack error followed by a solo block by sophomore middle blocker Nikki Binetti reversed the advantage before Prof junior middle blocker Elaina Hansen put down the set point.

Senior middle blocker Rachel Witt paced the Raiders with eight kills, a solo block and two assisted blocks while senior right side Stephanie Touzan tallied seven kills as Rutgers-Newark totaled just 25 kills for the second night in a row.

Junior setter Jen Mendoza totaled 21 assists while adding three kills, three aces, two blocking assists and 11 digs for the Raiders while sophomore libero Kandace Lewis came up with a team-high 12 digs.  Junior outside hitter Ula Nieznalska posted a match-high four aces and chipped in two kills and six digs.

Rowan junior outside hitter Krissy Collins posted a match-high 15 kills while inetti contributed a match-high 16.5 points on 11 kills, three aces, two solo blocks and an assisted block.  Junior setter Nicole Ciandella distributed 36 assists and made 13 digs while Hansen and senior outside hitter Katie Havlicek combined for 13 kills.

Binetti had four kills, a pair of service aces and a solo block in the second game as the Raiders put down just three kills in the frame as momentum swung heavily to the Profs.

In the third game, Witt and Touzan had two kills apiece as Rutgers-Newark jumped out to a 7-2 lead.  But the Profs took the lead for keeps at 13-12 and led by as many as four points as Collins had six kills in the game.  An ace by Mendoza made it 24-22 before Collins ended the night with a kill.

Rowan (7-6, NJAC 1-1) came up with 79 digs to thwart the Raider attack with junior libero Lauren Ruffalo getting a match-high 19 and junior defensive specialist Casey Grasso making 16 digs.

Rutgers-Newark travels to Kean University on Thursday at 7 p.m. for another NJAC contest.
