HILLSIDE, NJ – Rutgers-Newark battled to a 1-1 draw against Kean University on junior forward Raphael Araujo's record-tying goal in a New Jersey Athletic Conference battle on the East Campus Field.

Araujo, who entered the week as the leading goal scorer in NCAA Division III, shocked the Cougars when he lofted a shot over senior goalkeeper Tyler Callahan just seven seconds into the second half to level the score. Freshman midfielder Anthony DeRisi started the period with a touch pass to Araujo to post his ninth assist of the season and give him a string of six consecutive matches with an assist.

Callahan made three of his six saves in regulation during the opening period as Kean gained a one-goal advantage on the strength of the goalkeeper's leg. Callahan blasted a drop kick over the Raider defense that freshman forward Akwasi Adu chased down put away in front of Raider net in the 20th minute. Kean (9-5-1, NJAC 0-4-1) got a pair of team saves to help blank the visitors for 45 minutes.

Raider sophomore goalkeeper Matt Broomall finished with four saves.

Rutgers-Newark constructed a 17-11 edge in shots while taking five corner kicks to the Cougars' four.

Araujo's goal was his 18th of the year – tying him for the Raider single-season record set by Jeff Vazquez in 2008. DeRisi is now just one assist shy of the R-N season record shared by Wilson Cusano (1989) and Robert Campos (2008).

It was the Raiders' seventh overtime decision and third double-overtime contest. Rutgers-Newark is now 4-2-1 in extra period games and 1-1-1 in double-overtime outcomes.

Rutgers-Newark (11-3-1, NJAC 2-2-1) hosts New Jersey City (5-6-1, NJAC 2-3-0) at 7:30 on Wednesday night on Alumni Field in an NJAC match.
