MONTCLAIR, NJ – Junior midfielder Patryk Dawidczyk scored both Rutgers-Newark goals, but Montclair State came away with a 5-2 New Jersey Athletic Conference win at MSU Soccer Park.
Dawidczyk headed in a loose ball off of a corner kick by freshman midfielder Anthony DeRisi to give the Scarlet Raiders the early lead in the 15th minute and fired a direct kick inside the far post from 25 yards out in the 87th minute.
Sophomore midfielder Ryan Morris netted a hat trick, including two during the first half as Montclair State overcame the early one-goal deficit. Junior Brian Cullen and sophomore Lucas Terci each had a goal and assist for the Red Hawks (9-2-1, NJAC 2-1-1).
The Raiders (9-3-0, 1-2-0 NJAC) fell for the second time in their last three games following an eight-game winning streak.
Montclair tied the game in the 29th minute on Terci's fourth of the year before Morris netted the first two of three consecutive tallies to give the Red Hawks a 3-1 advantage at the break. Morris put away a cross from Terci in the 76th minute to make it 4-1 before Cullen capped the MSU scoring with an unassisted goal in the 79th minute.
Sophomore Matt Broomall had four stops for the Raiders while freshman goalkeeper Michael Gonzalez made five saves for Montclair State.
The Raiders constructed a 24-13 advantage in shots and took five of the six corner kicks in the match, but MSU was more efficient, putting nine of its shots on goal.
Rutgers-Newark continues action in the NJAC with a home contest against The College of New Jersey on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. on Alumni Field.
