NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark had its chances, but Ramapo College edged the Scarlet Raiders, 2-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match on Alumni Field.

After the teams battled to a scoreless tie at the half, seniors Renae McEvoy and Alexis Sutton and junior Janelle Vega put shots on goal for the Raiders (5-11-1, NJAC 1-6-0), but Roadrunner senior goalkeeper Talia Auslin (6-8-0) stopped them all to notch her second shutout of the season.

Senior midfielder Katie Popowych came off the bench to have a hand in both Ramapo goals. She sent a crisp cross from the left side that went off the hands of Raider freshman goalkeeper Diana Aviles in front of the net. Sophomore defender Jaimie Towey punched the loose ball into the left side of the net for the game winner in the 60th minute.

In the 65th minute, Popowych took a long through pass ball from freshman midfielder Brooke Miller for a breakaway goal that gave Ramapo (6-9-0, NJAC 3-4-0) some breathing room.

With the Raiders down 1-0, Vega and Sutton put solid shots on goal a minute apart before Popowych netted the final tally.

Aviles finished with four saves for the Raiders who fell in league play for the second straight time by a score of 2-0. Rutgers-Newark has three 2-0 NJAC losses at home this season.

Ramapo constructed an 11-9 advantage in shots and had the edge in corner kicks, 3-1, in the evenly played match.

Rutgers-Newark hosts Drew University in a non-conference match on Alumni Field at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
