HOBOKEN, NJ – Rutgers-Newark lost a defensive struggle against nationally-ranked Stevens, 2-1, at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
The Scarlet Raiders (13-4-1) could muster only a late goal by senior midfielder Brian Barrera in the 84th minute as the Ducks (12-1-1), ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division III by the NSCAA, got a tally in each period to stave off the upset bid.
Barrera netted his second goal of the year by putting a crossing pass from freshman midfielder Anthony DeRisi inside the left post to make the final 6:24 tense. DeRisi extended to nine his streak of consecutive matches with an assist while pushing his Rutgers-Newark record total for the season to 13.
Junior forward Raphael Araujo had a header sail just wide with 2:19 left as the Ducks escaped being forced into an extra period. Araujo also hit the post with a shot in the 75th minute.
Sophomore forward Carson Pryor staked Stevens to a 1-0 halftime edge when he picked up a long pass from senior back Leonardo Casas and squeezed a tough angle shot past sophomore goalkeeper Matt Broomall in the 25th minute.
Sophomore midfielder Colin Phillips went airborne to slip another improbable shot past Broomall in the 53rd minute.
Stevens constructed a slim 12-9 lead in shots and took one more corner kick than the Raiders, 6-5.
Broomall made four saves while senior goalkeeper Paul Killian notched two first-half stops on shots by Araujo and DeRisi.
The loss snapped a five-match non-losing streak for the Raiders who had gone 4-0-1 since October 5.
