NEWARK, NJ – Freshman forward Hubert Dul's golden goal in the second overtime lifted Rutgers-Newark to a 2-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference victory over The College of New Jersey on Alumni Field.
Dul ran onto a long, looping crossing pass from the left side by sophomore forward Patryk Dawidczyk about 25 yards out, dribbled inside the 18 and sent a shot past diving Lion senior Aaron Utman into the right side of the net to end the 2-hour, 15-minute marathon. Dul's third tally of the season was the first game winner of his young career.
Dawidczyk gave the Scarlet Raiders the early lead by putting away a crossing pass from the left side from freshman midfielder Anthony DeRisi past a diving Utman just 15:05 into the fray.
TCNJ senior forward Kevin Shaw squared the match in the 76th minute by taking a through pass from sophomore midfielder Matt Taylor near the top of the 18 and firing a shot that got past sophomore goalkeeper Matt Broomall on the left side. Broomall (10-3-0) made five saves.
The teams battled throughout with Rutgers-Newark taking a 20-19 edge on shots on the game-winning goal while each squad attempted two corner kicks.
The Raiders peppered 11 shots on the Lions' goal with Utman making seven saves and his defensive mates twice clearing shots out of the mouth of the goal when he was down. Junior defender Ryan Sullivan kicked away a pair open-goal chances by Raider junior forward Raphael Aruja in the 11th and 32nd minutes to keep things tight.
Rutgers-Newark (10-3-0, NJAC 2-2-0) is now 4-2 in overtime matches while TCNJ (7-3-2, NJAC 2-2-1) is 2-2-2 when play goes beyond 90 minutes.
TCNJ is at Muhlenberg while Rutgers-Newark visits FDU-Florham for a non-conference match on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
