MADISON, NJ – Rutgers-Newark rallied on goals by junior forward
Raphael Araujo and sophomore midfielder
Patryk Dawidczyk to down FDU-Florham, 2-1, on Robert T. Shields Field.
In a defensive struggle, the Scarlet Raiders (11-3-0) managed just a dozen shots while the Devils (7-4-1) were limited to just seven by a stingy Rutgers-Newark defensive side. Sophomore goalkeeper
Matt Broomall needed just three saves to post the victory.
FDU got the early lead when sophomore midfielder Chaz Armand put away a crossbar rebound of a shot by freshman midfielder Dylan Meyler just 12 minutes into the contest. Those were the first shots of the match for the Devils.
But the Raider defense hardened, allowing just one more FDU shot in the opening period.
Araujo, NCAA's Division III's goal scoring leader with 16 entering the contest, snapped a two-match drought by scoring on an assist by freshman midfielder
Anthony DeRisi in the 35th minute to level things at the half. DeRisi now has a string of five matches with an assist to push his season total to eight.
Dawidczyk spun and fired the game winner into the bottom right side of the goal in the 73rd minute, giving him a goal in three straight matches.
FDU freshman goalkeeper Nick Mihalik made five of his six saves in the second half when Broomall stopped shots by high-scoring senior forward Ryan Hurdes and Meyler to spell the difference.
Rutgers-Newark returns to New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Kean University on the East Campus Field in Hillside.
