WALTHAM, MA – Rutgers-Newark dominated the stat sheet, but Roger Williams erupted for three goals in eight minutes in the second half to post a 3-1 win in the NCAA D-III Championship opening round on Brandeis University's Gordon Field.
The Scarlet Raiders (17-6-1) out-shot the Hawks (16-5-1), 30-9, and took nine of the match's 12 corner kicks, but Roger Williams senior goalkeeper Jon Pelloso made eight saves and his defenders cleared two other Rutgers-Newark chances to spell the difference.

Raphael Araujo raced into the middle of the box to one time a shot into the upper left of the goal off of a cross from the left flank by junior forward
Patryk Dawidczyk at 28:35 to break the ice with his 27th goal of the season. Araujo had forced Pelloso to make a heady save in the 25th minute against a chip shot.
Rutgers-Newark controlled play through the early part of the match, forging a 7-2 edge in shots through Araujo's opening goal.
Pelloso made five saves to offset a 13-3 disadvantage in shots by the Hawks in the first half. Rutgers-Newark took four corner kicks to Roger Williams' one in the opening period. Sophomore goalkpper
Matt Broomall did not have to make a save for the Raiders.
Senior forward David Caruso, freshman midfielder Trevor Sparda and senior forward Trevor Hoxsie posted markers at 56:18, 59:12 and 64:19 reverse a dominating performance by the Raiders.
Caruso put a shot over Broomall off of a long service from the right side by sophomore forward James Sheldon. Less than three minutes later, Sparda put back the rebound of a shot by Hoxsie to put the Hawks ahead. Hoxsie then put in the insurance goal in the 65th minute.
The three goals came on the Hawks' only shots on goal.
The loss ended the winningest season in Rutgers-Newark men's soccer history which was capped by its first trip to the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship match and its first invitation to the national tournament.
Roger Williams will take on host Brandeis at 5 p.m. on Sunday in the NCAA second round. The winner will advance to the round of 16 next weekend.
