CHESTER, PA – Unbeaten Widener limited Rutgers-Newark to three shots to take a 3-0 decision in Leslie Quick Stadium and snap the Scarlet Raiders' two-match winning streak.
Seniors Renae McEvoy and Kathy Jironza and freshman Paige Lazar put shots on goal, but Pride senior goalkeeper Valarie Perretti stopped all three to post the shutout.
Freshman goalkeeper Diana Aviles, who made five saves while facing 15 shots, kept the Scarlet Raiders close by making three first-half stops as Widener went to the break leading just 1-0 on a penalty kick goal by senior midfielder Karen Thomas just four minutes into the match.
Senior midfielder Kelly Buckley fed Thomas in the 70th minute and junior midfielder Jenna Pedrick in the 79th for goals which gave Widener (5-0-1) some breathing room.
Rutgers-Newark (3-2-1) hosts Mount St. Mary on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. on Alumni Field.
