Box Score

NEWARK, NJ – Junior forward Raphael Araujo netted the golden goal 3:57 into overtime as Rutgers-Newark edged Ramapo College, 1-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match on Alumni Field.

Araujo put back a hard shot by freshman midfielder Anthony DeRisi that ricocheted off of Roadrunner senior goalkeeper Steve Monaghan to break the defensive stalemate and give the Scarlet Raiders (9-2-0, NJAC 1-1-0) a 3-2 record in overtime matches. Ramapo (4-4-1, NJAC 1-2-0) slipped to 1-3-1 in extra-period decisions.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Broomall (9-2-0) posted his third shutout of the season by making six saves while Monaghan stopped four Raider shots.

In a physical, well-played first half, Broomall had four saves to Monaghan's two as the Roadrunners gained the slightest edge in shots, 9-8, while the Rutgers-Newark took all four corner kicks the period.

The Raiders dominated the second half with an 11-5 edge in shots, but they could not find the net. DeRisi rifled a shot off the right post in the 47th minute before freshman midfielder Hubert Dul did the same in the 75th minute for Rutgers-Newark's best chances to win in regulation.

The Raiders, who took all three shots in overtime, bounced back from a 4-3 overtime loss to Rutgers-Camden (11-0-0, NJAC 3-0-0) and have now won nine of their last 10 matches.

Araujo's 16th goal of the season was his fourth game winner and his second golden goal.

Rutgers-Newark is at Montclair State (7-2-1, NJAC 1-1-1) on Wednesday night at 7 for another NJAC test before hosting The College of New Jersey (7-2-1, NJAC 2-1-0) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
