Box Score NEWBURGH, NY – Junior goalkeeper
Veronika Tueros notched her second straight shutout as Rutgers University-Newark took its third consecutive victory with a 1-0 win over Mount Saint Mary on Kaplan Field.
Sophomore forward
Paige Lazar put the lone goal into the left side of the net from inside the box off of a cross from the right wing from junior midfielder
Sara Corson at 62:03 and Tueros (3-4-1) made it stand up by making three of her six saves as the Knights outshot the Scarlet Raiders, 6-0, over the final 23 minutes. It was Lazar's team-leading third game winning marker.
Tueros stopped back-to-back shots just six seconds apart in the 71st minute against freshman defender Destiny Ribadeneyra and senior midfielder Nicole Gianotti to cut off a late surge by Mount St. Mary (7-4-0). The junior goalkeeper saved the final shot of the match by freshman defender Allison Jones with 8:21 left.
The Knights outshot the Raiders, 13-6, and took both of the corner kicks in the contest, but Tueros proved to be the difference. Mount St. Mary freshman goalkeeper Mary Riley came up with three saves.
It was the fourth shutout win of the season for Rutgers-Newark (8-4-1) and came on the heels of Saturday's 3-0 domination of New Jersey Athletic Conference foe New Jersey City. It marks the second 3-game winning streak of the season for the Raiders who opened the season at 3-0-1.
Rutgers-Newark plays at FDU-Florham on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in another non-conference match before returning to NJAC play on Saturday at Stockton.
