Box Score MADISON, NJ – Junior midfielder
Sara Corson posted her first hat trick to help Rutgers University-Newark extend its winning streak to four matches with a 3-0 win over FDU-Florham on the Robert Shields Field.
The Scarlet Raiders (9-4-1) notched their third straight shutout behind five saves by senior goalkeeper
Diana Aviles (6-0-0) who lowered her goals against average to .72 with her second shutout of the season.
Corson ran her season total to 11 with two markers in the first half and another in the second to spell the difference in the contest.
She netted her third game-winning goal of the season in the 33rd minute when she hammered a shot from 10 yards out on the right side past diving sophomore goalkeeper Annie George. Less than a minute and a half later, Corson made it 2-0 when she scored a breakaway goal on a long through ball from beyond midfield by freshman forward
Haley Savva.
After Rutgers-Newark forged slim edges in shots, 8-4, and corner kicks, 2-1, during the first 45 minutes, the Devils flipped the script in the second half. FDU-Florham out-shot the visitors, 6-4, while taking the only corner kick of the second period. But, Aviles made three of her saves after the break.
Corson iced the decision when she put away the rebound of a shot off the crossbar by sophomore forward
Paige Lazar in the 67th minute.
The Raiders put seven of their 12 shots on-goal with Corson peppering five of her six tries between the pipes.
