ATLANTA, GA – Rutgers University-Newark out shot Covenant College, 14-9, but the Scots rolled to a 3-1 win in the Sonny Carter Invitational on a hat trick by senior midfielder Joel Friesen.

The Scarlet Raiders (0-1) could not find the net in the season-opening loss on the campus of Emory University as junior goalkeeper Daniel Kubin fought off a furious opening surge to help stake the Scots to a 1-0 lead at the half.

Sophomore midfielder Hubert Dul put two headers on goal for the Raiders in the opening 16 minutes and sophomore forward Charlie O'Connell banged a shot off the post nine minutes into the fray.  Senior midfielders Rafael Donado and Diego Moraes also forced Kubin to make saves before the break.

Junior goalkeeper Matt Broomall made all three of his saves in the second half but Covenant registered all of its goals before O'Connell breathed life into the Raiders with an unassisted goal in the 77th minute.

Rutgers-Newark took three shots and a corner kick in the final 11 minutes but could not get to within a goal of the Scots (1-0).

It was the first 3-goal game for Friesen who netted what proved to be the game winner in the 19th minute on an assist from senior forward Snoppy Davidson.  After posting an unassisted goal in the 56th minute, Friesen scored on another assist from Davidson to make it 3-0 with 14 minutes remaining.

Rutgers-Newark takes on host Emory (0-0-1) in the final game of the 2-day invitational at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.  Emory battled to a 1-1 double-overtime stalemate against Centre College (0-0-1) in Friday's first match.
