Box Score

NEW PALTZ, NY – Junior midfielder Sara Corson netted the second of her two goals with just 16 seconds left to give Rutgers University-Newark to a season-opening 2-1 win over Skidmore College in the Michelle Vargas-Robin Tournament.

Corson, who leveled the match at 1-1 in the 65th minute, took a long through pass from senior forward Sarah Cunha and buried the game-winning goal in the upper left corner of the net with 89:44 on the clock.  Cunha collected the ball in transition near midfield, dribbled past a defender and sent it ahead to Corson in the middle of the field.  The junior beat sophomore goalkeeper Madison Plummer one-on-one for the marker.

Corson, a transfer from Rutgers University, put away a crossing pass from junior midfielder Cristina Estremera for her first tally in Scarlet & Black.  She scored on her only two shots of the contest.

Junior goalkeeper Veronika Tueros made eight saves for the Scarlet Raiders (1-0) to offset a 17-4 advantage in shots by the Thoroughbreds (0-1).  The Raiders took the only two corner kicks in the contest.

Skidmore goalkeeper M Plummer stopped a shot by Estremera in the 68th minute to stall the Raider rally.  A shot by senior forward Victoria Nunez sailed high in the 77th minute in the only other attempt by Rutgers-Newark.

The Thoroughbreds went up early when senior Lauren Alexander scored on a crossing pass into the box from the left wing by junior forward Arena Manning.

Skidmore forged a 9-0 edge in shots during the first period, but Tueros made three saves to keep things close.  Tueros made two more saves on five Skidmore shots in during the opening 29 minutes of the second half before Corson's initial tally kick started the Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark faces SUNY Cobleskill (0-0) at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow on the campus of New Paltz.

The Raiders travel to the College of Staten Island on Wednesday before hosting the Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic on Alumni Field on September 6 and 7.
