Box Score NEWARK, NJ – Sophomore forward
Charlie O'Connell netted the first two goals as Rutgers University-Newark overpowered Manhattanville, 3-0, under the lights of Alumni Field to run its win streak to six matches.
O'Connell tallied his fifth and sixth goals of the season on a put-back header in the first period and a header off of a free kick in the 57th minute while the Scarlet Raiders (6-2-0) totally dominated play by taking 27 shots to the Valiants' four and launching 11 corner kicks to the visitors' zero.
Junior goalkeeper
Matt Broomall (5-2-0) needed just one second half save to notch his first shutout of the season.
After a shot by sophomore midfielder
Hubert Dul bounced off the cross bar into the left side of the box, O'Connell was there to register the first goal which stood up as the only tally of the opening period.
The Raider took 13 shots in the first period, forcing junior goalkeeper Steve Singson to make four of his 10 saves, while Manhattanville did not take a shot until freshman midfielder Jeffry Carreira attempted a hurried free kick with just four ticks left in the half. His shot sailed just wide right.
Singson covered a low, hard penalty kick by senior forward
Raphael Araujo 14 minutes into the match to keep things close for the first 56 minutes.
O'Connell gave the Raiders some breathing room when he bounced a header from the left side of the box inside the far post after senior midfielder
Diego Moraes launched a perfect crossing pass from the right side on a free kick.
Less than five minutes later, Araujo put a header from the middle of the box on goal off of a corner kick by sophomore midfielder
Anthony DeRisi. Singson batted the ball away but midfielder
Dylan Elias headed in the insurance goal for his first tally of the year.
Rutgers-Newark begins New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at The College of New Jersey. The Lions (3-3-2) battled FDU-Florham to a 1-1 tie Wednesday night to give them back-to-back draws.
