KING POINT, NY – Rutgers University-Newark rode an early lightning bolt from all-American Raphael Araujo and a late surgical strike from senior Edgar Abreu to a 2-1 win over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Tomb Field.
 
Araujo scored just six seconds into the game when he caught Marine goalkeeper Corey Maier off the line and launched a shot over his head off the initial touch of the contest from sophomore forward Charlie O'Connell to stun the hosts.
 
Abreu snapped a 1-1 deadlock with the game winner by one timing a crossing pass in the box from sophomore midfielder Tyler Nowak in the 78th minute.
 
Junior goalkeeper Matt Broomall (1-2-0), who made four saves, got the win allowing a tying goal in the 73rd minute to sophomore forward Gavin Yingling when the Raiders failed to clear a ball from their own zone.  Yingling put the loose ball into the middle of the net from the box.
 
It was an evenly-played, physical match with each team taking 10 shots.  The Mariners managed a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
 
The Raiders snapped out of an 0-2 start to the season while Merchant Marine slipped to 1-1-1.
 
Rutgers-Newark plays in the Jimmy Mills Tournament at Haverford College this weekend, taking on the University of Scranton (2-0-0) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.  The Raiders face host Haverford at 1 o'clock on Sunday.
