NEWARK, NJ – Lightning almost struck twice for Rutgers University-Newark, but the Scarlet Raiders had to settle for a 1-1 double overtime stalemate against Frostburg State on the opening day of the Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic on Alumni Field.

Junior forward Sara Ramirez finished a beautifully executed 2-assist play with just 39 seconds left to send the match into overtime and shock the Bobcats (2-0-1) before junior midfielder Sara Corson barely missed a header from the top of the box in the final seconds of the second overtime.

The Raiders (3-0-1) rallied in the second half after Frostburg controlled play during the opening period.  As the game wore on, Rutgers-Newark grew stronger on the attack.

Senior forward Stephanie Fazenbaker gave the Bobcats the first goal in the 82nd minute to break up the shutout.  Freshman forward Jaci Buteau sent a low crossing pass from the left side all the way through to the other side of the box where Fazenbaker sent a shot inside the far post to make it 1-0.

Frostburg State went into full stall mode over the next eight minutes before the Raiders got one last gasp.

Junior midfielder Cristina Estremera sent a through pass from the middle to Corson who got behind a defender on the right side of the box.  Corson sent a crisp cross to Ramirez near the middle of the box.  Ramirez, who slipped inside a Bobcat defender, hammered the shot over helpless Frostburg State junior goalkeeper Katie Smith into the middle of the net to send the Raiders into a celebration and stun the Bobcats.

The Raiders pulled the trigger on both shots in overtime with Estremera forcing Smith to make a save in the 98th minute ahead of Corson's horn-beating final attempt.

Raider junior goalkeeper Veronika Tueros (1-0-1) matched Smith with six saves in the tightly contested battle.

Frostburg State finished with a slim 13-12 edge in shots while Rutgers-Newark attempted all three of the corner kicks in the match.

In the opening match, New Paltz sophomore Sloane Lipshie netted the lone goal in an assist from senior midfielder Eleni Anselmi in the 69th minute as the Hawks (3-0-0) edged Brooklyn College (0-3-0).

Sunday, Frostburg State takes on Brooklyn College at 1 p.m. before Rutgers-Newark battles New Paltz at 4 o'clock.
