Box Score HAVERFORD, PA – Rutgers University-Newark made the big plays in the second half to down host Haverford College, 3-1, for the team championship in the Jimmy Mills Classic on Walton Field.
The Scarlet Raiders (3-2-0) reeled off their third straight win of the week behind a balanced attack and a stingy defense while the Fords (2-1-0) fell for the first time this season.
Sophomore midfielder
Hubert Dul notched the game-winning goal and got in on the Raiders' insurance tally with an assist while senior forward
Raphael Araujo and sophomore forward
Charlie O'Connell also found the net.
Junior goalkeeper
Matt Broomall (3-2-0) did not make a save while getting the win as his defensive mates twice swept away shots on goal. Junior defender
Paul Tarnawski stopped a header by freshman midfielder Russell Nicholson which would have knotted the score at 2-2 in the 70th minute.
Araujo netted his fifth goal of the week in the 21st minute, hammering a shot into the lower left corner which stood up for a 1-0 Raider edge going into the half.
Five minutes into the second period, Dul found the ball in a fray following a corner kick by sophomore
Dylan Elias and headed in what proved to be the game winner.
The Fords drew to within a tally in the 63rd minute when sophomore defender Maclyn Willigan put away a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Will Corkery.
Haverford turned up the pressure over the next minutes but could not pull even. Freshman forward Williams Edwards clanged a shot off the crossbar in the 66th minute before Tarnawski's defensive gem kept the Raiders in the lead.
Dul and senior forward
Edgar Abreu set up O'Connell's header in the 85th minute with a flick pass on the left side followed by a cross into the box for the putaway.
