Box Score 2 NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers University-Newark's late rally fell short as SUNY New Paltz held on for a 2-1 win and the team championship in the Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic on Alumni Field.
The Scarlet Raiders (3-1-1) fell for the first time this season to the Hawks (4-0-0) who constructed a 2-0 lead and held on for the final minutes.
Junior midfielder
Sara Corson one-timed a one-bounce pass into the box by her sister, freshman defender
Emily Corson, in the 82nd minute to breathe hope into the Raiders. Shots by senior forward
Sarah Cunha and freshman forward
Haley Savva in the 86th minute did not find the mark as Rutgers-Newark could not repeat its Saturday feat of sending the match into overtime with the tying goal in the final minutes.
It was a hard-fought, even struggle with each team taking a dozen shots and the Hawks forging the slimmest of margins in corner kicks, 2-1. But New Paltz put six shots on goal to the Raiders' three to spell the difference.
Junior goalkeeper
Veronika Tueros (1-1-1) totaled four saves to New Paltz freshman Katelyn Cordero's two.
Classic MVP Skye Kaler settled a loose ball 20 yards out on the left side and rifled a shot into the left side of the net to stake the Hawks to a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute.
Sophomore forward Katie Mulry went on a give-and-go break away exchange with freshman forward Julia Friedman in the 77th minute, rolling a shot from the right side of the box inside the far post to register the game winner.
Corson's fifth goal of the season set up the tense final minutes. Sophomore defender
Victoria Benet joined
Sara Corson on the all-tournament team for the Raiders.
New Paltz, which upended Brooklyn College, 1-0, on Saturday, was the only unbeaten and untied team in the invitational.
Earlier in the day, senior forward Stephanie Fazenbacker exploded for a hat trick and added an assist to power Frostburg State to a 6-0 win over Brooklyn College.
Rutgers-Newark hosts Widener on Alumni Field Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
