Women’s Soccer Battles Stockton to 1-1 Draw

NJAC Standings

NEWARK, N.J. (October 10, 2015)
– The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team and Stockton University battled to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at Alumni Field in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.

The Scarlet Raiders move to 2-2-1 in the conference and 11-3-1 overall, while the Ospreys move to 8-2-4 and 0-1-4 in the NJAC.

A very evenly contested match from start-to-finish, Stockton ended with an 11-7 edge in shots and a 6-1 margin in corners as most of the action took place between the two penalty boxes.

Stockton was able to take a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute, but the Raiders answered at 42:27.

The Ospreys' score happened quickly along the near sideline as junior midfielder Alexa Fama chased down a pass, touched several times before crossing to the middle of the box and finding sophomore Lindsey Thomas for a one-timer into the left corner.

R-N answered late in the first when sophomore Nicole Gomez and senior Sara Corson connected for Corson's team-high 17th goal of the season. Gomez possessed the ball in the middle of the field before splitting the defense with a through-ball to Corson who slipped behind the Osprey back line. Corson easily chased the ball down, and found herself one-on-one with the goalie before calmly depositing her shot into the upper-left for the score. Gomez pocketed her team-leading seventh assist on the play.

Stockton had the best chance early in the second half, but sophomore goalkeeper Diana Carvalho was able to make a splendid save to thwart a breakaway in the 56th minute. Carvalho played it aggressively, breaking up the play at the top of the box.

With 13 minutes to go Chelsea James – who had just checked in for Stockton - broke free and nearly put her team on top, squarely hitting the left post with a shot before Carvalho corralled the carom and the score remained tied 1-1.

Moments later, Gomez was taken down, resulting in a Stockton yellow card about 25 yards away from the goal. Senior midfielder Cristina Estremera nicely served the ball into the box, but the ball grazed off a Scarlet Raider head and resulted in a goal kick.

Estremera had a solid look at the top of the box with eight minutes left but her shot went just high, and Corson nearly had her second with 7:02 left, almost putting home a bouncing rebound on a vacated goal.

In the 20 minutes of extra time, neither team had a noteworthy scoring chance other than several thwarted runs, offside calls or crosses. Stockton took the only two shots in OT, both from more than 30 yards out and neither put a scare into the Scarlet Raiders.

Carvalho ended with four saves for Rutgers-Newark, while her counterpart Nicole Pallante made one.

The Scarlet Raiders will return to action with a visit to William Paterson University Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. in a key NJAC showdown.
