CAMDEN, N.J. (October 31, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team was defeated by Rutgers University-Camden, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in the first round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament.
Third-seeded Camden improves to 12-7-1 and moves on to face second-seeded Stockton University Wednesday night in the conference semifinals. Sixth-seeded Rutgers-Newark drops to 13-7-1.
Just like the first meeting between the two rivals, Rutgers-Newark ended the contest with distinct advantages in the box score, but ultimately falling. The Scarlet Raiders finished with a 26-13 margin in shots, taking 18 in the second half and eight in the first, holding a 4-3 edge in corners and a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Matt Broomall made five saves in goal for the Scarlet Raiders, while his veteran counterpart James Brett tallied nine denials.
Rutgers-Camden took a 2-0 lead in the match, scoring goals 9:55 apart. Ramadan Bayyan – who tallied the game-winner against R-N last Saturday night – headed a goal in on a set piece at 72:06, and Shane Guyer scored his third of the season at 82:01. Ray El-Khoury and Grant Taylor picked up assists for Rutgers-Camden.

Sebastian Gostynski gave the Scarlet Raiders hope in the 85th minute of play, making it a 2-1 game at 84:24 when he rang the bell for the fifth time this season. Junior
Anthony DeRisi pocketed the assist for the Scarlet Raiders after taking the ball to the end line, cutting back and feeding Gostynski for the score. Gostynski now has a team-high 17 points on the season, while DeRisi earned his second helper on the play.
After pulling within one, the Scarlet Raiders continued to press as they had been doing all game, creating five shots in the final five minutes and generating a pair of corners as well. Junior
Arek Szoldrowski and sophomore
Chigozie Atubi each had attempts blocked 25 seconds apart, and moments later a DeRisi bid was saved by Brett after Atubi took a corner.
The frantic final minutes continued with another corner from DeRisi and a header from freshman
Timothy Farias that sailed wide with 1:27 on the clock. Junior
Charlie O'Connell had the closest and last attempt at a tie for Newark, sending a glancing header off the far-left post with less than a minute to play, narrowly missing sending the match to overtime.
R-N was ranked fourth in the South Atlantic Region in the NCAA's most recent Regional Rankings and will await the release of NCAA and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship brackets one week from Monday.
