Veterans Key Women’s Soccer Win Over MSMC

NEWARK, N.J. (October 5, 2015) – Seniors Sara Corson and Cristina Estremera provided the scoring punch as the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team improved to 11-3-0 with a 3-2 triumph over visiting Mount Saint Mary College Monday night in a non-conference match on Alumni Field.

The win is the third straight for the Scarlet Raiders as the hosts also handed the Knights their first defeat in six outings dating back to a 2-0 loss at Richard Stockton on September 19. The Scarlet Raiders will return to action Saturday night when they host Stockton in a key New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) showdown on Alumni Field.

Corson scored twice to give her 16 for the season – also recording her seventh game-winning goal of the year in the process. Estremera scored for the second-straight game and now has at least one goal in every home match this season. The veteran midfielder has nine markers this year – all at home.

Estremera and Rutgers-Newark struck first, taking a 1-0 lead at 15:37. The senior received help on the play as junior Victoria Benet fed Estremera after she received a pass from sophomore Angelika Barris. Both players earned their first assist of the season.

R-N nearly went on top 2-0 when freshman Juliana Ceballos controlled a loose ball at the top of the box before letting a shot loose on goal, however, Knight goalkeeper Mary Riley was in position to make the save.

The Knights tied the score at one in the 22nd minute, when Melissa Guilmette recorded her fifth goal of the year, chasing down a through-ball from Destiny Ribadeneyra and putting her shot inside the far post.

The two teams played the length of the field for the next 20-plus minutes with R-N getting the better run, possession and field position, but the hosts were unable to take the lead until the waning seconds of the period.

With the ball deep in the Mount St. Mary zone, a hand ball was called on the defense after the Scarlet Raiders attempted a cross with 10 seconds on the clock. The infraction occurred inside the box, giving Rutgers a penalty kick opportunity, and Corson made the most of it, nailing the PK for her 15th marker of the year and a 2-1 Scarlet Raider lead.

Rutgers-Newark would receive insurance just 7:12 into the second half when freshman back Sunna Baig caught the defense sleeping after a corner. Sophomore Nicole Gomez took the corner for the Scarlet Raiders and the ball eventually found its way outside the box 30-plus yards away. Baig was able to step up and loft the ball back over the defense to Corson for the score. Baig's pass had the perfect touch needed to allow Corson to gain control and deposit her shot inside the right corner after just one dribble.

R-N continued to control the game, but MSMC did score on a failed clearance with 8:02 on the clock. Guilmette chased down a volley and was able to net her sixth of the year on a breakaway, but the Raider defense did enough in the final eight minutes to secure the team's 11th win of the season.

The Scarlet Raiders ended the contest with a 14-7 margin in shots, putting nine on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Diana Carvalho made four saves to earn the victory, while her counterpart Riley made six in defeat. Rutgers-Newark also finished the contest with a 5-2 margin in corner kicks.

The 11 wins for Rutgers-Newark is one off the team's regular-season total of 12 from a record-breaking 2014 season. The Scarlet Raiders finished last year with 14 victories after a run to the final of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro/Upstate Championship.
