NEWARK, N.J. (April 1, 2015) – The Rutgers-Newark baseball team picked up its second-straight come-from-behind win Wednesday, downing visiting Mount Saint Mary College, 7-5, at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Scarlet Raiders erased a 5-0 deficit en route to improving to 7-10 on the season. The Knights drop to 5-7 in defeat.
After falling behind 3-0 after one, 4-0 after two and 5-0 following the top-half of the fourth inning, the Scarlet Raiders scored the game's final seven runs to earn their second comeback win in as many outings.
The hosts were able to score a pair of tallies in the fourth, took the lead for good in the sixth and tacked on an insurance run in the eighth. Leading the way was the Scarlet Raiders' bullpen, tossing eight-plus innings of relief, allowing just one unearned run and five hits. Despite three errors, the Scarlet Raiders' defense turned a season-high four double plays to give the offense a chance.
Earning the win was freshman reliever Michael Zibrin who went six innings and allowed just one unearned run. Freshman
Luis Rojas came on and tossed two scoreless frames to earn his second save, using a trio of strikeouts to avoid trouble.
After an error opened the door for the Scarlet Raiders in the fourth, an RBI groundout from freshman DH
Dominick Fazio put R-N on the board and an RBI single from senior third baseman
Nick Gencarelli trimmed the Knight lead to three (5-2).
Rutgers-Newark completed its comeback with four two-out runs in the sixth inning. Junior right fielder
Cameron Dias started the rally with a one-out single, and junior shortstop
Ryan MacFarlane put two men on with a single after a groundout. A walk to sophomore first baseman
Chas Bohannon loaded the bases, and Monday's hero
Josh Cote delivered a two-RBI single to center. With the score 5-4, senior catcher
Dan Lopez came to the plate and delivered a two-out two-run double down the left field line, giving the Scarlet Raiders the lead for good.
In the eighth, MacFarlane led off with a single and stole two bases before scoring on a Cote sac fly for the final margin.
MacFarlane finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Cote was 1-for-3 with three runs batted in and a run scored. Lopez, who delivered the game-winning hit, was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI's.
The Scarlet Raiders will return to action Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. when they host New Jersey City University in an NJAC game at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Fans unable to make the trip to Newark should follow @ScarletRaiders on twitter for updates.
