NEWARK, N.J. (April 16, 2015) – Senior starter
Jonathan Dominguez tossed a complete-game five-hitter and sophomore left fielder
Josh Cote went 3-for-4 with three RBI's to lead the Rutgers-Newark baseball team to a 4-0 shutout of William Paterson University Thursday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium.
With the win, the Scarlet Raiders improve to 10-19 overall and 1-10 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. William Paterson falls to 17-13 overall and 4-7 in the NJAC. The two teams will close out their home-and-home series Friday afternoon in Wayne. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
Dominguez was excellent in his second complete-game win of the season, striking out four and walking just one. The victory moves his record to 2-2 as the veteran right hander faced just 31 batters after inducing two double plays.
The Rutgers-Newark defense played extremely well throughout the game, turning a pair of double plays and getting strong glove work at third base from senior
Nick Gencarelli in the sixth inning and junior center fielder
Ryan MacFarlane in the fourth. Gencarelli and shortstop
Gerry Patrizio made a number of excellent plays throughout, compiling five assists apiece, with MacFarlane going deep into the left-center gap for a running catch. Rookie second baseman
Anthony Hernandez – who was making the first start of his career – was also strong, tallying four assists and taking part in both double plays.
The Scarlet Raiders scored once in the first inning and two more in the third to open a 3-0 lead for Dominguez. In the opening frame, R-N recorded four hits and pushed across one run thanks to an RBI single from sophomore left fielder
Josh Cote.
It was Cote delivering another clutch hit in the third, ripping a liner into the left-center field gap to drive in right fielder
Billy Taylor and catcher
Justin Marks who both walked earlier in the inning.
Cote finished the game with three hits in four trips to the plate and three runs batted in. Even when retired, Cote made solid contact, lining out to center field in the seventh.
Rutgers-Newark picked up 13 hits on the day. Taylor was 2-for-4 with a run scored and walk, and Patrizio went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Junior designated hitter
Cameron Dias finished 2-for-4, as did Hernandez.
The Scarlet Raiders scored their final run of the game in the eighth. Dias, sophomore first baseman
Chas Bohannon and Hernandez all singled with one out before a Paterson error allowed Dias to score.
After Friday's game at William Paterson, R-N will host Montclair State University in an NJAC doubleheader Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Riverfront Stadium. The Scarlet Raiders will then take on CCNY Sunday in a non-conference doubleheader in Staten Island beginning at 4:30 p.m. Both games will be seven innings.
