NEWARK, N.J. (September 12, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team improved to 4-2-2 on the season Saturday afternoon in the opening match of the 2015 Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic, defeating New York University (2-2-0) by a score of 1-0.
The victory is the third straight for the Scarlet Raiders who will take on Johns Hopkins University Sunday at 4 p.m. in the tournament's finale. That match will be preceded by NYU and The College of New Jersey. Hopkins and TCNJ tied 3-3 in the afternoon's second match.
Rutgers-Newark was able to get off 10 shots in the first half, putting five on target, but the Scarlet Raiders were unable to score and went into the intermission tied 0-0.
R-N had several strong chances early generated by sophomore forward
Chigozie Atubi, junior midfielder
Hubert Dul and others, but the Violets made some saves and the Scarlet Raiders just missed on others.
Freshman forward
Damjan Agaj ripped a shot from the top-right of the box that glanced off the outside post, and junior forward
Charlie O'Connell headed a bid into the upper-right 90 but was whistled for a foul prior to the attempt in what were two close calls for the Raiders.
Midway through the first, NYU generated several quality chances but senior goalkeeper
Matt Broomall was able to make a diving stop on a tough deflection and one chance ricocheted off the far post. Broomall made three saves in total to earn the shutout.
Early in the second, Dul did a nice job to create a chance for Atubi but his header was saved, and an Atubi corner found Dul's head but that was saved as well.
The Scarlet Raiders continued to push, wearing out an NYU side that had been playing a man-down since a red card midway through the first half, eventually breaking the tie when Gostynski scored for the third time this season. Junior
Anthony DeRisi lofted a corner in the box, and after a scrum in front, the ball found Gostynski who put a well-placed shot in the lower-right corner.
A Violet player was whistled for a second yellow in the 76th minute, giving R-N a two-man advantage, but countless close chances refused to find the net.
Despite only scoring once, Rutgers-Newark was in total control, holding NYU without a shot for the entire second half and the final 64:11 overall.
The Scarlet Raiders finished the match with a 23-7 margin in shots, putting 14 on goal. They also finished with a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
Rutgers-Newark has outscored its foes 12-2 during its current winning streak.
