Lazar’s OT Goal Lifts Women’s Soccer to Fourth Win

BABSON PARK, Mass. (September 12, 2015) – Senior Paige Lazar waited for the perfect time to score her first goal of the season, finding the back of the net thanks to an assist from sophomore Haley Savva with 10 seconds left in the first overtime to lift the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over host Babson College Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, Rutgers-Newark improves to 4-1-0 on the young 2015 season, also handing Babson its first loss (4-1-0).

Sophomore goalkeeper Diana Carvalho earned her fourth win in net, making eight saves in 99:50 of action as the R-N defense held the Beavers off the scoreboard for the final 93:58 of game time.

Babson took an early lead in the sixth minute on a header from Taylor Goldsborough, but the Scarlet Raider defense was able to tighten up and give the offense a chance to come back.

R-N pulled even at 22:15 when senior Sara Corson scored for the fourth time this season on the first of two Savva assists. On the play, Savva played the ball over the top to Corson who was making a run. The Babson keeper played it aggressively, but Corson was able to chip it in for the score. Savva now leads the team with three assists, with Corson scoring for the third time in the last two matches.

After regulation yielded no result, the two teams went into OT. Each keeper was forced to make a save, but the Scarlet Raiders were able to find the goal just before the end of the first overtime session. Lazar's game-winner came just moments after she re-entered. Following a throw-in on the left sideline, Savva played the ball into the box and Lazar beat a defender and touched the ball past Elizabeth Mycock, who again was charging off her line.

Six of Carvalho's eight saves came in the second half as Babson ended the match with a 17-9 margin in shots. Rutgers held a 4-3 edge in corners.

R-N will look to make it five wins in six matches when the Raiders battle Wellesley College Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
