WELLESLEY, Mass. (September 13, 2015) – Senior
Sara Corson scored twice to help lift the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over previously unbeaten Wellesley College Sunday afternoon.
The Scarlet Raiders – who are now 5-1-0 overall – defeated an unbeaten team for the second-straight day, downing Babson College Saturday by the same score. Five of the team's six outings this year have been decided by one goal, and the Raider defense has only allowed more than one score against just one time this season.
"What a great showing from our team," Head Women's Soccer Coach
Ariana Ruela said. "They played with a lot of heart and really dug deep this weekend to get two big wins on the road."
R-N erased an early 1-0 deficit for the second time in as many days as the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on a tally from Maddie Carlborg. The guests responded less than 10 minutes later at 25:05 when Corson put home a pass from Saturday's hero
Paige Lazar. On the play, Lazar delivered a low diagonal cross back to Corson for a one-timer inside the near post. The tally was the fifth of the season for Corson and the assist was the first for Lazar.
The Scarlet Raiders would get the decisive goal at 66:06 when
Nicole Gomez found Corson. With her back to the goal, Corson cut back after receiving the pass, tucking her shot into the far corner after hitting the post. The veteran has now scored five times in the team's last three contests.
Following the tally, the Rutgers-Newark defense tightened up, allowing just two total shots and none of over the final 19:45.
"I thought we played better defensively," added Ruela. "We were more organized and more agressive, and our offensive did a nice job putting quality chances away."
Sophomore goalkeeper
Diana Carvalho earned her fifth win of the season in goal for Rutgers-Newark, making six saves. Wellesley ended with a 14-10 edge in shots, and a 7-0 margin in corners.
The Scarlet Raiders have now outscored their opponents 13-5 on the season and have already won four times on the road (4-0). Their only loss was a neutral site match.
R-N will return to action against Old Westbury on Wednesday night in the second match of 2015 Soccer Fest at Alumni Field.
