Women’s Soccer Runs Win Streak to Four

NEWARK, N.J. (September 16, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team improved to 6-1-0 with a 5-0 shutout of The College at Old Westbury Wednesday night at Alumni Field.

The win is the fourth-straight for Rutgers-Newark and runs the team's winning streak to four matches. The Scarlet Raiders – who are now 6-1-0 – have outscored the opposition 10-0 in two home games this year. Old Westbury falls to 2-3-0 in defeat.

The Scarlet Raider defense continued to play well, picking up their third shutout of the season. They have allowed multiple goals against just once this season, and sophomore goalkeeper Diana Carvalho notched her sixth win in net.

R-N dominated the game from start-to-finish, ending the night with a 28-7 margin in shots, putting 22 attempts on target. Old Westbury keeper Michelle Muller made 17 saves in goal for the guests, and Rutgers also finished with a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

Senior midfielder Cristina Estremera put the hosts on the board at 5:01, scoring her fourth goal of the season and fourth goal at home thanks to an assist from senior Allyson Daly. Daly was able to get the ball to Estremera who split the defense at the top of the box and gained a 1-v-1 against Muller before scoring.

R-N continued to create great chances, going on top 2-0 when senior Sara Corson received a pass, turned and took the ball all the way to goal. It was her seventh goal of the season, and she has now registered at least one tally in the team's last four games (six overall).

The score remained the same until 48:41 when freshman Juliana Ceballos rang the bell for the third time this season, fighting for and winning a loose ball in front before finding the back of the net.

Senior Sara Ramirez may have had the most impressive tally of the night in the 66th minute. The veteran received a pass and streaked down the near (right) side. Feeling some pressure from the defense, Ramirez cut to the left, stopped, then cut back to her right before beating the defense and ripping a shot that beat Muller. The tally was her first of the season.

Junior midfielder Raquel DaCosta notched her second to put a close to the scoring after a well-executed corner from sophomore Nicole Gomez. Gomez's corner found its way to DaCosta just off the near post and DaCosta deposited her attempt into the goal.

The Scarlet Raiders will return to action on Saturday afternoon (1 p.m.) when they visit The College of New Jersey in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener for both sides.
