Women’s Soccer Trips in NJAC Opener at TCNJ

EWING, N.J. (September 19, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team saw its win streak stopped at four, falling by a score of 5-0 at 16th-ranked The College of New Jersey Saturday afternoon in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener for both sides.

The Scarlet Raiders fall to 6-2-0 overall (0-1-0 NJAC), with the Lions improving to 4-0-2 overall (1-0-0 NJAC).

TCNJ controlled the action, holding a 19-2 margin in shots, putting 12 on target and scoring twice in the first period and three more in the second. R-N put both its shots on target and sophomore goalkeeper Diana Carvalho made seven denials in goal. The guests were able to generate a trio of corners compared to seven for TCNJ.

The Scarlet Raiders will return to action at the College of Mount Saint Vincent Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. as they look to get back in the win column.

TCNJ went on top 1-0 in the 11th minute, opening a 2-0 lead when Marykate Sullivan tallied at 35:04. The Lions recorded their third marker of the match in the 47th minute, with R-N coming back to get a shot on goal from senior Sara Corson and a corner from sophomore Nicole Gomez.

R-N had a strong chance in the 66th minute when freshman Juliana Ceballos's bid was saved, giving the Raiders a corner, but the Lion defense was able to keep the Rutgers-Newark off the board, scoring at 61:54 and 70:04 for the final margin.

Rutgers-Newark will play two non-conference contests on the road Monday (Mt. St. Vincent) and Wednesday (Widener University) before returning to Alumni Field on September 26 in an NJAC battle against Rowan University.
