RIVERDALE, N.Y. (September 21, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team bounced-back from a Saturday loss to defeat the College of Mount Saint Vincent by a score of 3-0 Monday afternoon in Riverdale.
Senior
Sara Corson (two) and sophomore
Emily Corson (one) had the R-N goals.
With the win, the Scarlet Raiders improve to 7-2-0 on the season, while the host Dolphins fall to 1-5-0. R-N has now outscored its foes 21-10 (plus-11), and the guests pitched their fourth shutout behind four saves from sophomore goalkeeper
Diana Carvalho.
Sara Corson recorded the team's first goal of the match at 13:53 with her eighth of the year thanks to an assist from senior
Cristina Estremera. On the play, Estremera delivered a through-ball to the goal scorer on the right wing, pocketing her second assist of 2015.
A little less than 23 minutes later,
Emily Corson rang the bell to give the Scarlet Raiders a two-goal margin, recording her first brace of 2015 and the second of her career. The younger Corson was able to make the Dolphins pay for a turnover while attempting to clear it out of their own zone, beating sophomore goalkeeper Elizabeth Martin with her shot.
Senior back
Julie Dantoni helped
Sara Corson record her second of the game and ninth of the season, pushing R-N to a 3-0 edge just 6:07 into the second stanza. On the play, Dantoni chipped a pass into the box where Corson was positioned perfectly for a header. The helper was the second of the season for the Scarlet Raider veteran Dantoni.
Carvalho and the Raider defensive unit was able to keep the shutout intact down the stretch, getting a pair of denials late in the match, as the offense continued to press, generating three bids in the final 10 minutes of action.
The Scarlet Raiders finished the game with a 7-1 margin in corners and a 16-13 edge in shots. Eight of the Raiders' 13 attempts were on target. Martin finished with five saves for Mount Saint Vincent.
