CHESTER, Pa. (September 23, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team improved to 8-2-0 with a 2-1 win at Widener University Wednesday night. The victory is the second in the last three days for the Scarlet Raiders who were led by two more goals from senior
Sara Corson.
Corson, who now leads the nation in game-winning goals with five, has 11 on the season and four scores in two games this week.
Corson scored her 10th with just 3:02 remaining in the first, heading the ball off the left post and seeing it go in after deflecting off the Widener (3-4-1) keeper. Sophomore
Nicole Gomez picked up her team-high fourth assist of the season on the play.
Each side was able to get off five shots in the first half, with the Scarlet Raiders putting 4-of-5 on target and getting the one goal. None of the Widener bids were on target and the hosts took the lone corner of the period.
Senior midfielder
Cristina Estremera registered her third assist and 11th point this season, delivering a through-ball to Corson who scored in a one-on-one situation for her second of the game. Estremera is second on the team in goals (four), assists and points.
The two-goal lead was short-lived for Rutgers-Newark as Widener answered at 71:30 when Brielle Errico put home her third. Prior to the score, the hosts had been held without a shot for more than 13 minutes of game time, and following they did not record another the rest of the way.
Rutgers-Newark ended with a 9-8 advantage in shots, putting seven on goal compared to just one for Widener. The Pride ended the game with a 3-1 edge in corners, and sophomore goalkeeper
Diana Carvalho earned her eighth win for R-N in goal.
The Scarlet Raiders will now turn their attention to a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest Saturday night in Newark. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. from Alumni Field and all the action can be seen live at
