NEWARK, N.J. (September 16, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team won its sixth-straight match Wednesday on Alumni Field, downing visiting Mount Saint Mary College by a score of 4-1.
R-N is now 6-2-0 on the season, while MSMC falls to 1-5-1.
Rutgers-Newark completely controlled the first half of play, scoring a trio of goals and allowing the Knights just three shots – one of which came on a free kick that senior goalkeeper
Matt Broomall had to save.
The Scarlet Raiders would seize control with goals just 29 seconds apart from junior forward
Charlie O'Connell and freshman forward
Timothy Farias. The first was a thing of beauty, ending with O'Connell heading in a score for the second time in as many outings – the first of which came in the second overtime period of Sunday's win over Johns Hopkins University. Prior the header, Mayorga held the ball on the far side, about 12 yards outside the top of the box. The midfielder lofted a cross to the near (left) post where junior midfielder
Dylan Elias was waiting. Elias headed the ball to the middle, finding O'Connell for the score. Both Elias and Mayorga earned assists on the play.
Just 29 seconds later, Farias scored, putting away another Mayorga feed on the right side of the box. The score was first in the R-N rookie's career.
The Scarlet Raider lead swelled to three goals in the 42nd minute when O'Connell scored his second of the game and fourth of the season and Mayorga picked up his third assist of the half. Mayorga received the ball in the middle of the field before lofting the ball over the Mount defense. O'Connell was able to break through, holding off his defender while simultaneously taking and making his bid.
The Scarlet Raiders finished the opening 45 minutes with a 10-3 margin in shots and each side took one corner apiece.
MSMC scored via a penalty kick in the 54th minute after a Raider penalty in the box, but the Scarlet Raiders went back up by three at 77:57 when freshman
Justin Thompson was able to scorch a one-timer into the lower-right corner for the first tally of his career. Knight goalkeeper Tyler Biscone came off his line to punch out a corner off the foot of freshman forward
Damjan Agaj. The ball caromed to Thompson and the rookie connected squarely to net his first.
The second half saw the Scarlet Raiders in complete control, but the guests were able to get some shots off. Freshman goalkeeper
Christian Ramm, who came on to start the second, did a nice job in making five saves and allowing just the one goal on the MSMC penalty kick.
R-N ended the game with a 17-11 margin in shots and a 4-2 edge in corners.
Since a 2-1 overtime loss at No. 20 Rochester, Rutgers-Newark has won its last five matches by a combined score of 18-4.
The Scarlet Raiders will look to make it six-straight wins when they host The College of New Jersey Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. It will be the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener for both schools.
