Men’s Soccer Blanks Brooklyn, 3-0

NEWARK, N.J. (September 2, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team bounced back nicely from a loss in the 2015 season-opener, blanking visiting Brooklyn College, 3-0, Wednesday night at Alumni Field in Newark.

With the victory, the Scarlet Raiders improve to 1-1-0. Brooklyn – playing in its first game of the season – falls to 0-1-0.

From the opening touch, the Scarlet Raiders dominated, keeping possession for more than 80 percent of the first 45 minutes and scoring twice.

The first brace came from sophomore forward Chigozie Atubi on a free kick. The second-year Scarlet Raider was taken down at the top of the box and the Bulldogs were whistled for a foul. Atubi then stepped up and buried the ensuing free kick into the upper-right corner for his second tally of the season to give R-N the lead in the 24th minute.

Just 5:57 later, Rutgers-Newark pushed its lead to two (2-0) on a pretty goal from junior forward Tyler Nowak. The goal – his first of the season – was assisted by sophomore Alex Torres who crossed in front to Nowak who put his shot in the lower-left corner. The helper was the first for Torres and fourth of his career after picking up three as a freshman.

Rutgers-Newark had several other first half chances, ending the period with a 7-2 margin in shots and a 3-0 edge in corners.

The Scarlet Raiders all but put the match away just 2:32 into the second half when junior midfielder Sebastian Gostynski scored for the first time as a Scarlet Raider, depositing a feed from sophomore midfielder Carlos Castro. On the play, Castro hit a streaking Gostynski who shot across the mouth of the goal into the left corner. The point by way of assist was the first of Castro's career.

Throughout the rest of the second half, the Scarlet Raiders generated several other strong scoring chances with head coach Kevin East playing 20 players in the match.

Rutgers-Newark ended things with a 15-4 margin in shots, putting nine on goal. The Scarlet Raiders also had a 5-0 edge in corners.

Getting the start in goal for R-N was junior Elmer Flores. Flores played well, pitching the first shutout of his career along with the rest of the Scarlet Raider defense. The New Brunswick, N.J. native was credited with two saves and played aggressively when he needed to on the few runs the Bulldogs were able to make.

The Scarlet Raiders will now hit the road for a pair of away matches in Rochester. While in upstate New York, R-N will battle the University of Rochester (Saturday) and SUNY Cortland (Sunday) in the Flower City Tournament.
