BROOKLYN, N.Y. (September 2, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over Brooklyn College in the 2015 season-opener for both schools Wednesday evening at BC Field in Brooklyn.
Despite only scoring once and struggling to finish throughout, the Scarlet Raiders dominated the game, holding possession for long stretches and controlling the field. Rutgers-Newark ended the contest with a plus-27 margin in shots (29-2) and put nearly half on net (14). The Scarlet Raiders also held an 8-1 edge in corners and forced Brooklyn goalkeeper Rebecca Harmata to make 13 saves over the course of the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Diana Carvalho got the call in the opener for the Raiders, turning in the first clean sheet of her career, making one denial in 90 minutes. The sophomore was a part of three combined shutouts as a freshman.
Rutgers-Newark was able to record the game winner 16:01 into the action after a corner from sophomore midfielder
Nicole Gomez. The corner found freshman midfielder
Juliana Ceballos who was making a run in front for a one-timer that ripped into the back-left side of the goal. Gomez, a transfer, recorded her first point as a Scarlet Raider, and the rookie Gomez picked up her first two with the marker.
After pitching seven shutouts in 2014, the Scarlet Raiders started off 2015 with a road shutout, something they did not do until October 6 of last season – the team's 11th match.
"It wasn't our best performance, but it's nice to get a positive result to open the season," head coach
Ariana Ruela said. "We would have liked to finish a few more chances, but I was pleased with the opportunities we created and the flow of the game in general."
Rutgers-Newark will look to move to 2-0-0 on the season when it plays in the Wilkes University Tournament on Saturday and Sunday against host Wilkes and SUNY Cortland.
