Ceballos, Corson Score in Women’s Soccer Win Over Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (September 5, 2015) – Freshman Juliana Ceballos and senior Sara Corson each scored goals as the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team improved to 2-0-0 on the season with a 2-1 win at Wilkes University Saturday afternoon.

A competitive match from start-to-finish, Rutgers-Newark ended the contest with a 10-9 margin in shots. The Scarlet Raiders were plus-three in shots on goal (7-4) and held a 2-0 edge in corners.

Sophomore goalkeeper Diana Carvalho picked up her second win of the season, making three saves in 90 minutes. The second-year Scarlet Raider – with help from the entire back line – has now allowed just one goal in 180 minutes this season.

The two sides played a scoreless first half, but the Raiders found their way on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute when Ceballos netted her second marker of the year. On the play, senior back Julie Dantoni played the ball up the line to Ceballos who was making a run. The first-year Raider made several touches before finishing near side in the upper-left corner of the goal.

Rutgers-Newark went on top 2-0 at 74:46 when Corson netted her first thanks to an assist from sophomore Haley Savva. Savva received the ball on a throw in, quickly sending a through-ball to Corson who controlled and put her shot into the back of the net.

Wilkes (0-1-1) clipped the lead in half, in the 81st minute and put a pair of shots on goal at 85:32 and 87:54, but Carvalho made two big saves and the Scarlet Raider defense did the rest, improving to 2-0-0 on the season.

"It was a good fight until the last minute but we were able to come out on top," head coach Ariana Ruela said. "We stayed physical, focused and driven the whole way and will need to do more of the same tomorrow."

Rutgers-Newark will return to action against SUNY Cortland Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre.
