INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 22, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team is moving up the national statistical rankings of late, having won six-straight matches dating back to a September 6 victory over 19th-ranked SUNY Cortland.
The 7-2-0 Raiders won their first NJAC game Saturday night over No. 18 The College of New Jersey and will return to action at St. Joseph's – L.I. Wednesday night before visiting conference rival Rowan University Saturday afternoon.
As a team, Rutgers-Newark checks in third nationally and second in the conference with 23 assists, and is No. 10 nationally in total points (75). Their 26 total tallies has them ranked 12th nationally, while the team's 2.56 helpers per game is 15th in the country. R-N cracks the top-40 in points per game (No. 29; 8.33) and scoring offense (No. 36; 2.89) as well.
Individually, several Scarlet Raiders find themselves inside the top-50 as freshman forward
Damjan Agaj and junior midfielder
Sebastian Gostynski are tied for 28th in total assists with four. Gostynski's two game-winning goals has him 35th in the nation, and sophomore forward
Chigozie Atubi is currently just outside the top-50 (No. 56) in points with 13.
Five Quick Kicks1. Rutgers-Newark is 2-1-0 against nationally ranked teams this season. The Scarlet Raiders suffered a tough loss at No. 20 Rochester but bounced back to down No. 19 Cortland and No. TCNJ.
2. R-N has outscored the opposition, 26-10, and is plus-77 in shots taken. The Raiders also have more than doubled-up foes in shots on goal, 86-42.
3. An amazing 15 players have scored at least one goal this season led by five each from
Chigozie Atubi and
Charlie O'Connell.
4. The Scarlet Raiders have assisted on 23-of-26 tallies this year (88.5 percent).
5. Rutgers-Newark has allowed more than regulation goal against just twice this season.
