Rowan Stops Men’s Soccer Win Streak at Seven

GLASSBORO, N.J. (September 26, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team saw its winning streak stopped at seven games Saturday, falling 7-1 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest at Rowan University.

Host Rowan improves to 8-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the conference, while the Scarlet Raiders drop to 8-3-0 and 1-1-0 in the NJAC.

Rutgers-Newark showed no ill effects from a 45-minute delay at the start of the match, jumping out to a 1-0 lead at 4:42 when junior Anthony DeRisi scored his second of the season thanks to an assist from classmate Charlie O'Connell. O'Connell – the reigning NJAC Offensive Player of the Week – fed DeRisi whose shot beat the Rowan goalkeeper on his right side.

The Profs wasted little time in answering, scoring 2:55 later to knot the match 1-1 as sophomore Jake Connors recorded his fifth goal of the year.

Rutgers-Newark was able to get a corner 14th minute but could not score, and the hosts went on top for good when junior Shane Patterson scored his second at 20:42 on an assist from sophomore Travis Ward.

The rest of the first period saw each side with chances, but the two teams would head to the locker room with the score holding at 2-1 in favor of the Profs. Rutgers held a 5-4 margin in shots, with Rowan maintaining a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

In the second, Rowan tallied exactly three minutes in and didn't look back, outscoring the Raiders 5-0 and ending the match with a 19-5 margin in shots and a 9-4 advantage in corners.

Freshman Blake Czajkowski scored a pair as a total of six players registered markers for the Profs.

Freshman Kyle Dennis earned the win in goal making one save. Senior Matt Broomall suffered the loss for the Scarlet Raiders, making a total of five denials.

The seven-match winning streak for R-N began with a 3-1 win in the Flower City Tournament over No. 19 SUNY Cortland on September 6 and featured signature wins over Cortland, No. 18 The College of New Jersey, New York University and Johns Hopkins University.

Rutgers-Newark will look to bounce back on Wednesday night when the Scarlet Raiders host Ramapo College in another key NJAC match. Opening touch is slated for 7:30 p.m. from Alumni Field.
