Women's Volleyball Remains Perfect, Sweeps Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (September 3, 2015) - The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team remained perfect on the 2015 season, sweeping host Brooklyn College, 3-0, Thursday night. The Scarlet Raiders are now 3-0 and have won nine-straight sets over the first three days of the season.

The Raiders topped the Bulldogs by set scores of 26-24, 25-21 and 25-13.

R-N 26, Brooklyn 24
The Scarlet Raiders took a 4-2 edge behind sophomore outside hitter Karolina Kopacz, and went on a 5-0 run later in the set to open a 17-10 margin that looked insurmountable. However, the hosts were able to come all the way back with a nice run of their own, knotting the score at 21 and even opening a 24-22 margin moments later.

Despite losing the momentum and playing on the road, Rutgers-Newark clawed back to take a 1-0 edge. Two Bulldog errors allowed the Scarlet Raiders to tie the score before kills from junior right side Tabitha Davis and freshman outside Cassie Luken closed it out (26-24).

R-N 25, Brooklyn 21
The second set was back-and-forth to start and things were tied at 9-all after 18 points. Brooklyn went on to score 4-of-5 to open a 13-10 margin, but a 3-0 spurt for the guests – sparked by kills from sophomore outside Hayley Merrill and sophomore middle Rebecca Ford – tied the second set at 13.

Brooklyn went back up two (15-13) before a 4-0 run helped the Scarlet Raiders to a 17-15 lead. Luken, Davis and senior middle Sharee Gordon all made plays, but the Bulldogs kept fighting, re-taking the advantage (19-18).

The Scarlet Raiders would clinch the second set by ending on a 6-3 run, scoring the final three points via an error, a Merrill kill and an ace from sophomore libero Sue Riley.

R-N 25, Brooklyn 13
Tied at nine after 18 points for the second-straight set, Rutgers-Newark exploded to record the next eight points to open a 17-9 margin to wrap things up.

Sophomore outside Sydney Tuman got things going with a kill as the nine points came on the back of Luken's serve who delivered a pair of aces for good measure.

After Brooklyn picked up its 10th point of the set, the Scarlet Raiders ripped off six in a row to go up 23-10, eventually settling on the 25-13 set final. Back-to-back kills from Ford clinched the team's third win in three days to start the season.

Rutgers-Newark hit .125 in the match, totaling 29 kills and 16 errors. The Scarlet Raiders committed nine less errors than Brooklyn with each team notching 52 digs.

Gordon led R-N with seven kills and one block, while Luken had six kills, six digs and four aces in an excellent all-around performance. Riley finished with 15 digs, while sophomore setter Nathalie Breining had 18 assists and seven digs. Ford had four kills and hit .400 and Gordon converted at a .462 clip, needing just 13 total attacks for her seven kills. Freshman Bryanna Urbaez tallied six assists and six digs.

Rutgers-Newark will return to the court on Tuesday night against the College of Mount Saint Vincent inside The Golden Dome Arena. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. opening serve.
