Women’s Basketball Topples NJCU for NJAC Win

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (January 20, 2016) - Behind 25 points and nine rebounds from senior guard Arianna Williams and 10 points and 13 assists from junior guard Maria Simmons, the Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team picked up its second New Jersey Athletic Conference victory of the season Wednesday night at New Jersey City University, 60-45.

The Scarlet Raiders improve to 6-11 overall and 2-8 in the NJAC, snapping a four-game skid with the win. The Gothic Knights fall to 1-15 overall and 0-10 in the conference.

Rutgers-Newark put together excellent performances in the first and third quarters of Wednesday's tilt, outscoring the hosts 39-20 in the two frames combined and 19-8 in the third to all but seal the victory.

Williams hit eight three-pointers on 18 attempts from distance (8-of-26 overall) and went 1-for-2 at the line for her 25 points. The senior is now averaging 19.2 points per game and eclipsed 20 points for 11th time this season. Williams recorded four steals for the second-straight game and fourth time in six outings, and she has nine or more rebounds in six different games.

Simmons hit two three-pointers en route to 10 points, dishing out a season-high 13 assists and grabbing seven rebounds. Simmons now has three double-digit assist games and five-plus helpers in six-straight games.

Junior guard Shala Glenn had 11 points and three rebounds, and sophomore guard Nicole Skelly had eight points and eight boards in a strong performance. Sophomore forward Nikki Sammartino added six points, four boards and three blocked shots.

Rutgers-Newark shot 22-for-68 (32.4 percent) from the floor, 11-for-30 (36.7 percent) from deep and 5-for-11 at the line. The Scarlet Raiders grabbed 42 rebounds (16 offensive), tallied nine steals and 16 assists, leading by as many 23 points early in the fourth quarter of action.

The R-N defense held NJCU to 28.8 percent (15-for-52) shooting and 25 percent (4-for-16) from three, finishing the game plus-10 on the glass and forcing 25 Gothic Knights turnovers.

Williams and Skelly hit early three-pointers to help the Scarlet Raiders to an early 14-4 edge, and another Williams triple pushed the margin to 12 with 3:23 left in the first.

NJCU fought back within six points at several junctures in the second, but a Skelly jumper slowed the momentum and the Scarlet Raiders would go back on top by 10 after a coast-to-coast layup from Simmons.

Later, Simmons connected from deep, but NJCU's Deseree Johnson connected from range with 34 seconds left and trimmed the R-N lead to four (29-25) at the break.

The game was won in the third when a quick-hitting 6-0 rally turned a five-point Rutgers-Newark lead to 11 (39-28) with 7:02 remaining the period as all six points came on a pair of Williams three's. NJCU hung around for the next few minutes, but the Scarlet Raiders closed the period on an 5-0 run keyed by a Simmons three, one of three steals in the game from freshman Jocelyn Rodriguez and a Glenn jumper to take a 48-33 lead to the fourth.

A Glenn jumper and two Williams three's to open the fourth gave the visiting Raiders a 23-point lead, and they were able to cruise the rest of the way to the win. R-N bridged the final two periods by outscoring NJCU, 13-0.

Rutgers-Newark will look to make it two-straight conference wins Saturday when it hosts Stockton University in The Golden Dome Arena at 6 p.m.
