Men’s Soccer Streak at 5 after NJAC win at TCNJ

EWING, N.J. (October 1, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team won for the fifth-straight match Saturday, shutting out host The College of New Jersey, 1-0, in a key New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest at the TCNJ Soccer Complex in Ewing.

With the win, Rutgers-Newark improves to 11-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the NJAC. The Lions drop to 5-5-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the league.

The game-winner came off the foot of junior Alex Torres in the 32nd minute of the match, taking a through-ball from sophomore Stefano Muniz and capitalizing on the opportunity. After getting to the ball, the Fairfield, N.J. native found himself in a 1-on-1 with Lion goalkeeper Dan Walsh and buried his shot from 12-yards out for his third score of the year and first of the game-winning variety. The assist was the fourth of the season for Muniz.

Rutgers-Newark pitched its sixth shutout of the season overall and fourth in the last six matches. The Scarlet Raiders haven't allowed a goal over their last 237-plus minutes of game time.

TCNJ was able to boast the better run of play throughout the match, ending with a 26-6 margin in shots and a 5-4 margin in corners.

"Full credit to TCNJ," said Head Coach Kevin East after his team's win. "I think there was no question they played the better soccer today."

Despite the large deficit in total shots, Rutgers-Newark completed the contest with a 4-2 edge in shots on goal which is a testament to the Scarlet Raider defensive unit.

"We did a good job of defending and staying organized, and we didn't give up many clean looks on goal," added East. "On the positive side of things, we found the back of the net and made it count, but we need to improve when we have the ball."

Amazingly, Rutgers-Newark is now 8-2-0 away from Alumni Field (3-0-0 at home) and is 2-1-0 in NJAC road matches, something Coach East is proud of his team for.

"To win when we didn't play our best match is a testament to our team's willingness to fight for results. Any NJAC game on the road is a challenge and today we were able to come out with a win."

Freshman goalkeeper Andres Medina made two saves for Rutgers-Newark to earn his third clean sheet of the season. The rookie is now 9-2-0.

The Scarlet Raiders will return to action on Wednesday night with a non-league matchup with Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham. Rutgers-Newark will be wearing gold laces in their spikes in support of the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer initiative started back in 2011. All proceeds from the game will be donated back to Lace Up and donations will be collected October 5 at the game. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. from Alumni Field.
