Men’s Soccer Runs Win Streak to Eight, Shutout Streak to Six

MAHWAH, N.J. (October 12, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team continued its superb play Wednesday afternoon as the Scarlet Raiders improved to 14-2-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) with a 2-0 shutout win over Ramapo College.

The Scarlet Raiders have won their last eight matches dating back to September 19, and they have not allowed a single goal against in six-straight outings. The scoreless streak spans over seven matches, with the last goal against coming September 24 in a 2-1 win over Kean University. The unprecedented streak runs over 596:09 of total match time.

Junior Chigozie Atubi staked the Scarlet Raiders to a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute, punching in his third of the season. On the play, senior Sebastian Gostynski had an attempt cleared off the endline by Ramapo back Bayley Young, but Atubi was there for the clutch, game-winning goal. It was Atubi's first score since an 8-0 win against St. Joe's on September 26.

It was Ramapo (8-3-2 overall, 1-3-2 NJAC) that came out with a flurry of shots and a corner in the beggining stages of the match, but the Scarlet Raiders were able to withstand the early pressure and turn the tide.

After a 3-0 shot advantage for the Roadrunners, Rutgers-Newark started to control possession and field position and outshot the hosts 10-4 over the final 37 minutes of the first half.

Freshman goalkeeper Andres Medina made three saves for the Raiders in the first 45, two coming directly after Roadrunner corner kicks.

Rutgers-Newark allowed one shot early in the second half and then clamped down, allowing just two more shot attempts for the next 39 minutes. During that span, Rutgers-Newark was able to generate five looks, getting an insurance tally from Gostynski in the 62nd minute. The marker was the eighth of the year for Gostynski who is second on the team in that category, and the goal was assisted by sophomore Zachary Gillespie who now has a pair of helpers to go with a pair of goals this season.

From the Gostynski goal on, Rutgers-Newark seemed to cruise to the triumph, give up just one shot and one corner from 61:45 on as the defense tallied its ninth overall shutout of the season.

Medina earned the win in goal for Newark, making four saves to earn his fifth individual clean sheet of the year. His counterpart, junior Ryan Sprague, made two saves in defeat.

Rutgers-Newark finished the match with a 17-11 margin in shots and a 6-4 lead in shots on target, while Ramapo held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Rutgers-Newark returns to the field Saturday night in a premier NJAC match against nationally-ranked No. 3 Rowan University on Alumni Field. The contest will feature the top-two teams in the conference standings, and at the time of this writing, the two sides have combined for an overall record of 25-2-1 this season.

Prior Saturday's match, Jimmy John's will be handing out free sandwiches to Scarlet Raider fans at Alumni Field. The food giveaway is slated to begin at approximately 7:10 p.m.

#ROADWARRIORS: In addition to their winning streak and scoreless streak, the Scarlet Raiders are now 9-2-0 in games away from the friendly confines of Alumni Field.
