NEWARK, N.J. (October 12, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team suffered a hard-luck 1-0 setback at the hands of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival Ramapo College Wednesday night on Alumni Field.
Ramapo improves to 2-8-1 overall and 1-5-0 in the NJAC, while the Scarlet Raiders fall to 1-11-2 overall and 0-6-0 in the conference. Rutgers-Newark will visit conference rival Rowan University Saturday afternoon in its next match.
The game was played over the entire pitch, with Ramapo holding a slim 14-12 margin in shots and each side placing five attempts on target. Rutgers-Newark ended with a 3-2 advantage in corners.
The Scarlet Raiders' first good chance of the night came when junior
Nicole Gomez sprung sophomore
Juliana Ceballos on a run, but her shot went wide right by several feet and the game remained scoreless.
The Roadrunners would take a 1-0 lead at 33:26 when sophomore Michaela Knoblock scored for the second time this season, tucking her shot inside the left post after a feed from junior Nani Vizcaino in the middle of field.
Gomez broke free with 4:28 left in the period, but Ramapo freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Harvell came out to aggressively break up the play to keep her team up by one heading to intermission.
Carvalho made several nice plays in the half, getting credited with two saves as Ramapo held a 6-4 margin in shots and a 1-0 edge in corners.
Rutgers-Newark camce out with solid energy to start the second half, creating a nice chance with a give-and-go between junior
Haley Savva and Ceballos, but the cross was deflected and Harvell saved Ceballos' shot on the ensuing corner.
Newark had a great opportunity on a Gomez corner, but a header from freshman
Iné Collins was cleared off the goal line by junior Sydney Kaufman, and the rebound chance bounced to Gomez but her shot sailed high.
Ramapo countered with several chances over the next several minutes with Carvalho making a couple of quality agressive plays to keep her team within one.
With 20:09 left, Carvalho made a diving save towards the near post on a shot from Kelsey Sutherland, and with a shade under 11 minutes on the clock, the ball found Collins in the box after a corner, but her shot was denied by Harvell.
Over the final 10 minutes, R-N battled hard, out-shooting Ramapo 3-0, but the Scarlet Raiders could not find the back of the net and fell by the 1-0 final.
Carvalho finished the match with four saves, and Harvell had five for Ramapo.
