Valiant Effort in Loss to Ramapo for Women’s Volleyball

NEWARK, N.J. (October 13, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to visiting Ramapo College in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match Thursday night in The Golden Dome.

Despite the loss, Rutgers-Newark battled incredibly hard, taking a set from a Ramapo team that has won its last 16 matches overall and had dropped just five total sets in its previous 50 sets played.

Rutgers-Newark falls to 11-9 overall and 2-4 in the NJAC, while Ramapo moves to 20-3 overall and 6-0 in the league.

The Scarlet Raiders will return to action Friday and Saturday in the Arcadia Tournament in Glenside, Pa. R-N will battle the host Knights Friday at 4 p.m., and the Raiders come back for matches against Brooklyn College and CCNY Saturday.

Ramapo 25, Rutgers-Newark 21
The conference-leading Roadrunners scored 7-of-9 to start the match, but Rutgers-Newark did a nice job chipping away to get back in the set. A kill from junior Karolina Kopacz and solo-block from sophomore Cassie Luken pulled the Scarlet Raiders within one at 10-9, but a 6-1 run from the Roadrunners pushed the lead back to six (16-10).

Behind the service game of junior Sue Riley and back-to-back kills from Kopacz, Rutgers-Newark again battled back within two (21-19), but Ramapo was able to get two kills from junior Larysa Iwaskiw down the stretch to earn the 25-21 set victory.

Ramapo 25, Rutgers-Newark 13
Ramapo doubled up the Scarlet Raiders early, opening a 6-3 margin, but Newark responded with a 4-0 run to take a 7-6 edge following an Analis Capobianco ace.

The Roadrunners pulled back in front with a big 13-4 run, forcing a Newark timeout to try and slow the Roadrunner momentum. Unfortunately for the Scarlet Raiders, the guests continued to roll and took the set 25-13 to grab hold of a 2-0 lead.

Rutgers-Newark 25, Ramapo 17
Kills from junior Morgan Schweitzer and sophomore Jess Moy helped stake the Scarlet Raiders to an early 6-1 lead, but a 9-1 Ramapo run behind Iwaskiw swung the lead to the guest side at 10-8.

A Kopacz winner combined with a Ramapo error allowed Newark to tie things up at 11, and later in the set, a Moy kill followed by a Ramapo error tied the set at 16.

An ace from senior Kathy Hormaza helped Rutgers-Newark to a 17-16 edge, and a winner from sophomore Nicole Polak pushed the Raider margin to four (21-17) and forced a Ramapo timeout.

Two more Kopacz kills brought up set point, and a Schweitzer hammer helped Newark force a fourth set on the back of a great game-closing 9-1 rally.

Ramapo 25, Rutgers-Newark 23
It was the Roadrunners taking an early 3-0 edge in the fourth, upping the margin to nine at 11-2. R-N did not quit at all, ripping off three-straight tallies to trim the margin to six (11-5), and with Hormaza serving and Kopacz attacking, Rutgers-Newark battled back within three at 14-11.

R-N responded after another Ramapo run, battling hard to get within one (21-20) behind a kill from Polak and trio of Roadrunner errors, with a winner from Kopacz tying the set at 23 and sending the crowd into a frenzy.

However, an error from Rutgers and an Iwaskiw kill allowed Ramapo to escape the fourth with the win to secure its 16th-straight triumph.

Despite the tough loss, Rutgers-Newark acquitted itself very well as Kopacz and Hormaza each pocketed double-doubles. Kopacz had 15 kills (.314), 16 assists and seven digs, and Hormaza had 17 assists and 11 digs. Riley had a remarkable 32 digs, with Capobianco adding 17 and Luken led the blocking unit with two. Riley added six assists to her line, and Davis (eight) and Moy (seven) combined for 15 kills. Luken, Polak and Schweitzer each picked up four kills.

Rutgers-Newark ended the four-setter with 49 points, 42 kills, four aces, three blocks, 41 assists and 85 digs, and Ramapo had 62 points, 44 kills, 14 aces, four blocks, 41 assists and 75 digs.

Rutgers-Newark hit a match-high .258 in the first set and finished the contest with a .109 hitting percentage. Ramapo converted at a .101 clip, securing a .333 percentage in the second. Iwaskiw led the Roadrunners with 19 kills and 19 digs.
