Rowan Highlights
PITMAN, N.J. (October 18, 2016) – Freshmen
Fabio De Sousa and
Andres Medina of the Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team were honored by the New Jersey Athletic Conference (Monday) earning NJAC Rookie of the Week and NJAC Defensive Player of the Week nods, respectively.
Rutgers-Newark went 2-0-0 in the league to take over first place in the conference standings, earning a 2-0 win at Ramapo College and a 3-1 triumph over previously unbeaten and third-ranked Rowan University Saturday night in front of a packed house at Alumni Field. The Scarlet Raiders have now won nine-straight matches and are 15-2-0 and 6-1-0 in the league.
Medina picks up his second weekly honor the year, with De Sousa pocketing his third award from the conference.
De Sousa had two goals in the win over Rowan, taking passes from sophomore
Breno Lustosa in each case and finding the back of the net. The Long Branch native scored 2:38 into the match, depositing a shot in the lower-right corner of the goal from the top-left of the 18-yard box to give his team a 1-0 margin. Then, 22:14 into the second half, De Sousa took a long ball from Lustosa after a steal from senior
Dylan Elias, headed the ball to himself and chipped his shot up and in to give R-N a 2-0 margin.
De Sousa now 12 goals, seven assists and 31 points this season, with 7-of-12 markers going in the books as game-winners.
Medina was in goal for both victories and is now 13-2-0 overall between the pipes for Rutgers-Newark. He made four saves in the triumph at Ramapo, and recorded his fifth individual shutout and the team's ninth. Against Rowan, a personal and team scoreless streak was ended at 696 minutes, but he played an excellent match, making eight saves and allowing just a fluke goal with 2:38 left on a deflection. He finished the week with 12 denials and just one marker against in 180 minutes of action.
Medina now has just 11 goals allowed and a .77 goals-against average in nearly 1,300 minutes of action. The Manalapan native has made 66 saves and accumulated a .857 saves percentage.
Rutgers-Newark has three tough games remaining on the regular-season schedule; in Hoboken against non-conference foe Stevens Institute of Technology Tuesday night, home for NJAC rival Montclair State University Saturday night and at NJAC rival William Paterson University in the regular-season finale.
