National Ranking Release
HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 18, 2016) – Senior
Sebastian Gostynski scored two goals and senior
Mark Pazmino netted an absolute beauty of a game-winner as the seventh-ranked Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology, 3-1, Tuesday night at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
Rutgers-Newark has now won its last 10 matches overall and improves to 16-2-0 on the season. The Scarlet Raiders have outscored the opposition 29-3 during their winning streak and are now an excellent 10-2-0 in matches outside of Newark in 2016. The Ducks – who have made 13-straight NCAA Tournaments – fall to 8-5-1 with the loss, and the two teams have now split their last six meetings (3-3).
Rutgers-Newark was able to take an early 1-0 lead just 8:36 into the action when Gostynski rang the bell for the ninth time this season, one-timing a cross from freshman
Fabio De Sousa. The assist was the eighth of the year for De Sousa.
Just 1:59 later, Stevens tied the match, getting a marker from Andrew Masur and an assist from senior Jay Mikula as Masur was able to head in a high-arching service off a corner kick from Mikula.
Stevens continued to press Rutgers-Newark throughout much of the first half, but the defense and freshman goalkeeper
Andres Medina did just enough to keep the game tied at intermission. Medina made three saves in the period as Stevens finished with a 7-4 margin in shots.
The Scarlet Raiders came out and played very well in the second stanza, and despite being outshot 7-2 over the final 45, the Raiders controlled possession and field position for much of the action.
Pazmino's game-winner came at 56:25 and was an absolutely gorgeous goal. The veteran controlled a bouncing ball and put his shot from 35-yards out in the upper-right corner of the goal for his first tally of the year. Pazmino needed to strike the ball perfectly and did so with the precision needed to give his team a lead it would never give up.
The lead moved to two when a handball in the box helped the Scarlet Raiders to a penalty kick chance. On that chance, Gostynski stepped to the ball and calmly deposited his shot into the back of the net for his 10th tally of the year – second on the team.
Medina recorded three more saves in the second half for six on the night, making two diving denials and a number of aggressive plays to break up Stevens crosses and services into the box. Medina now has 14 wins and 72 saves this season while allowing only 12 goals against.
Rutgers-Newark will return to action Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts Montclair State University in a key New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match at Alumni Field. Prior to the game, Rutgers-Newark will honor its senior class as part of the annual Senior Night ceremony.
