MSU Tops Women’s Soccer in ’16 Road Finale

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (October 22, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team was defeated 4-0 by Montclair State University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game at the MSU Soccer Park Saturday evening.
 
Rutgers-Newark falls to 1-13-2 overall and 0-8-0 in the league, while Montclair moves to 12-3-1 overall and 6-2-0 in the NJAC.
 
The Scarlet Raiders will honor their seniors in the team's regular-season finale against conference rival William Paterson University Wednesday night. Kick-off from Alumni Field is slated for 7:30 p.m. and Senior Night is set to begin around 7:15 p.m.
 
The hosts scored a pair of goals in the first half, and two more in the second, ending the contest with a solid advantage in shots (22-7), shots on goal (12-3) and corners (9-1).
 
Junior goalkeeper Diana Carvalho made seven saves for Rutgers-Newark in 65-plus minutes of action, while freshman Heidi Paulson made one in 24-plus. Carvalho was charged with the loss.
 
Freshman Shayna Bohus paced the Scarlet Raiders with three shots overall and two on target. Veteran Angelika Barris had the other attempt on goal for the guests.
 
Montclair St. took the lead for good in the 21st minute when Jennie Hornstra scored her fourth of the season thanks to an assist from Emily Beenders. Then, with 4:12 left in the first, Ryelle Sansone tallied her fifth of the year to give the Red Hawks a 2-0 lead at the break.
 
Sansone rang the bell again 5:18 into the second half thanks to Beenders second assist of the night, and Sophie Calverly found the back of the net for the second time this year 3:36 later to close the scoring.
 
Freshman Samantha Richter, freshman Heather Kosinski and sophomore Juliana Ceballos were the other Scarlet Raiders to attempt shots in the match.
