Andres Medina of the seventh-ranked Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced Monday evening by the league office.
Medina helped lead Rutgers-Newark to a 2-0-0 week against tough competition as the Raiders won 3-1 at Stevens Institute of Technology Tuesday night, and then won by a 1-0 final Saturday night against NJAC rival Montclair State University to clinch a first round bye in the upcoming NJAC Playoffs.
The rookie earns his third NJAC weekly honor the season and second-straight NJAC Defensive Player of the Week nod.
Medina anchored the NJAC-leading Scarlet Raider defense with six saves against the Ducks in Hoboken and then eight stops in the shutout of the Red Hawks. The R-N newcomer now has 15 wins this season, and he leads the NJAC in goals against average, save percentage and shutouts against conference opponents.
For the year, Medina had six shutouts, a .73 goals-against average and 80 saves in nearly 1,500 minutes of action. He has compiled a 15-2-0 record and allowed just 12 total goals against in 17 starts.
Rutgers-Newark will visit William Paterson University Wednesday night for a chance to lock up the NJAC regular-season title and home field throughout the NJAC Tournament.
